What’s the secret ingredient in classic zombie cinema? Spoiler: it’s not brains.

George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead (1968) changed horror forever, but one of its most stomach-turning scenes hid a revolting behind-the-scenes truth that might make you lose your lunch faster than any zombie bite.

What Were Those Zombies Really Eating?

In the now-iconic scene where the undead feast on the burnt-out truck’s remains, you might think the gore was all clever makeup and red paint. Nope. The low-budget crew got creative and disturbingly resourceful.

To make the “human flesh” look wet and authentic under black-and-white film, the filmmakers used roast ham coated in chocolate syrup.

The combination looked eerily realistic on camera but smelled absolutely vile under hot studio lights.

If that’s not gross enough, they also used real animal organs—sheep hearts, lungs, and intestines—donated by a local meatpacking plant investor who believed in the project.

Actors playing the zombies had to actually put this stuff in their mouths for the shot.

According to the crew, it was so nauseating that some extras went pale and shaky right there on set. The filmmakers joked that they hardly needed zombie makeup after that, since everyone looked sick enough on their own!

Why It Still Matters Today

This gruesome bit of DIY effects work showed what could be done with almost no money, just creativity and guts.

The realistic, gritty texture of the gore gave Night of the Living Dead its legendary punch, helping redefine horror as something raw, chaotic, and disturbingly real.

More than fifty years later, filmmakers still look back at that scene as a masterclass in low-budget horror magic. No CGI, no fancy tricks, just pure ingenuity and a strong stomach.

It turns out the true horror wasn’t in the zombies, it was in what the actors had to eat to bring them to life!
