Imagine paying nearly half a million dollars for a piece of paper. Sounds insane, right?

But, when that paper happens to be the original 1932 movie poster for The Mummy starring Boris Karloff, it suddenly makes perfect sense to horror fans.

Why The Mummy Poster Became a Legend

In 1997, an original The Mummy poster sold at Sotheby’s for an unbelievable $435,500, setting a world record at the time.

Only three copies of the poster are known to exist, which instantly made it one of the rarest and most sought-after movie posters ever created.

Its design, eerie colors, and striking text captured everything that made Universal’s golden age of monsters unforgettable.

Collectors knew that they were buying a piece of cinematic history.

Even Metallica’s Kirk Hammett, a well-known horror enthusiast, owns one!

When Horror Met High Art

The record didn’t last forever, though.

In 2005, a poster for Fritz Lang’s Metropolis (1927) sold for $690,000 in a private sale, surpassing The Mummy’s price.

But even so, Universal’s early horror posters remain among the most coveted pieces of film art. Today, a surviving Mummy poster could fetch more than $1 million at auction.

These masterpieces are relics from a time when horror defined culture, design, and even dreams.
